About Pediatric Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapists (OT) are licensed professionals who help maximize the independence

of individuals limited by physical disability, cognitive impairment or developmental/learning

disabilities.

Areas We Address in Occupational Therapy

  • Motor planning and postural control deficits
  • Wheelchair seating and positioning needs
  • Self-care skills, including:
    • Self-feeding
    • Dressing
    • Bathing
    • Toileting
  • Fine motor and visual motor deficits, such as:
    • Grasping toys and small objects
    • Manipulating zippers, snaps, and buttons
    • Using scissors
    • Stacking blocks
    • Placing pieces in a puzzle
    • Tracing and handwriting activities
  • Sensory processing disorders
    • Signs and symptoms include:
      • Toe walking
      • Hand flapping
      • Difficulty with transitions
      • Sensitivities to movement (swings, slides, etc.)
      • Covering eyes or ears
      • Picky eating
      • Craving intense movements
      • Spinning self
      • Head banging

Sensory integration therapy is used to improve attention, social participation, self-regulation, and sensory-motor abilities.
